Night/Predawn Fishing with Capt. Paul Hobby
The hot summer months (June, July, August, and September) are the best time of the year to catch big snook and tarpon in the 40- to
80-pound class. Night is the best time to catch these trophy fish--and not just the hours after sundown. Fishing before the sun comes up
is not only the best time to catch big snook, it's also the most comfortable time to fish. The days are very hot and steamy, but
the hours before sunrise are very pleasant. It's a win-win deal. Once you try it, I'm sure you'll love it.

For this fishing, we leave the dock anywhere from 2 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. The earlier we leave, the better your chances for
hooking some BIG snook. We'll use only artificial lures or flies (because they work). This is also prime time for
the fly fisherman. Fly outfits in the 9-weight to 12-weight range with
floating, intermediate, and maybe a sinking line will have you ready for anything.
Adventurous anglers may want to get out and wade fish a portion of the time. Wade fishing at night is very exciting. We only
wade on good hard bottoms and in very safe areas. We all fish close by each other for fun and safety. While wade fishing at
night we have never been "skunked" if we spent at least one hour fishing.
Those less inclined to get in the water can look forward to doing night structure fishing. Docks, bridges, and
other solid objects that break the current hold some big snook during the night. And it's always
possible to find sea trout, ladyfish, or jacks tearing up schools of bait in lighted areas. |
